Recognizing prior learning appears to be a pragmatic approach to hiring and promoting employees in the workplace – but how can an employer ensure that the recognition is based on authentic skills and learning that can be objectively assessed?

It’s not a quick fix.

Some promising lessons from projects funded by WPLAR include:
•    RPL is part of a response to real, defined business needs– the most successful projects were developed in response to an identified need to understand required skills and competencies and have a process to assess and document those assessments.
•    RPL takes investment of time, internal resources and external expertise.
•    RPL is often integrated with other workforce development strategies – such as Essential Skills, competency development, credential recognition, skills training, etc..
